Chapter Seventeen

The sun was high up in the sky when I woke up. I wasn’t surprised, of course. I hadn’t fallen asleep until just before dawn. But I didn’t mind.

Right. I need to take care of those dead bodies. Need to go wash myself first, though.

I looked at my left hand.

Heh. Will have something good to remember.

I also remembered how I carried the long-eared forest beauty to the village. That was an additional pleasant memory to call upon in a time of need. I was happy with the way things turned out.

“Good morning, sir. Is your friend feeling better?” Marnin asked me during breakfast.

“Yeah, she’s fine,” I smiled.

“Do you want me to prepare some breakfast for her as well?” the innkeeper asked.

“Nah, no need. She already left,” I said.

“Is that so? Ok then,” Marnin smiled.

After I finished my food, I went directly to the forest. I was trying to find the area where we fought.

Huh? That’s strange. I think we fought somewhere around here.

I was walking back and forth but couldn’t find any bodies. I was certain I was in the right spot. The fallen tree and the crack on the ground indicated where I used the Ground Cutter against Sebastian. But Sebastian’s body was nowhere to be found.

That’s odd.

Only one day passed since our battle. If some monsters were to find the bodies, they wouldn’t be able to eat all of them. Even if they did, there would still be bones and pieces of armor lying around.

Walking further to the side I noticed an unpleasant smell. It was coming from behind the bushes. I opened the branches and saw a pile of ashes, or what was left of them, on the ground.

Those weren’t normal ashes, though. More like something had been burned with magic. A sinister magic at that.

What do you know? Somebody beat me to it.

I was more concerned than relieved to find the black ashes. That meant somebody else took care of the bodies. And in a way that no traces were left behind. I looked around to survey my surroundings but couldn’t see or sense anyone nearby.

But we fought only yesterday. There’s no way somebody found those bodies by accident. And even if they did, burning everything to crisps and removing their gear…

I looked around again. Then let out a deep sigh. I didn’t know what to think. It couldn’t be a coincidence. Somebody must’ve trailed them while they were trying to catch that elf, staying at a safe distance. But that would require some incredible skill, or some powerful magic.

Of course, nobody would stick around after they burned the bodies. They simply didn’t want to leave any evidence behind. After all, those were hired men. I heard them talking about the reward and I had found sizable amount of coins on them.

I guess that’s another mystery I won’t have an answer today.

There was no point in sticking around any longer. I turned around and went back to the village.

On my way back I was deep in thought.
